Healthcare workers have heard the obvious lines, the racing heart and the urgent check-up, on more shifts than they can count. The ones that land are specific to the job: night shifts, terrible coffee, handwriting nobody can read.
Timing matters more here than anywhere. Off duty, at the bar after a long shift, a good medical pun is welcome; on the ward it is just another interruption.
The best audience is people who already work in a hospital, pharmacy or dental practice, and they tend to enjoy lines that show you understand the job rather than ones that treat it as a costume. Thank-you cards, graduation parties for nursing and medical students, and staff nights out are all fair game.
Leave out anything about real illness or injury. A line about stealing someone's heart is fine; one about needing an ambulance is the kind of joke healthcare workers hear from actual patients, and it stops being funny around the third time.
